Wednesday, September 24, 2008: Ohio Players- I Wanna Be Free and Deniece Williams- Free

Hump-day gettin' to ya?? Just "can stands it no mo"?? Here'a a little musical escape...

Wednesday, September 24, 2008
Ohio Players- I Wanna Be Free (Live Performance)

No song so expresses the emotion of needing to escape. Whether its from someone or someplace, this song just evokes the longing for freedom. Best listened to with an alcoholic beverage...Colt 45, anyone? "Oww!"

Deniece Williams- Free (Live Performance)

Same theme, but smoother than the last selection. And the vibe of this songs suggests you have achieved and are enjoying the much-sought after freedom. This one is better for driving on a lazy afternoon- not drinking!
(This clip is not the full song as it is a television performance. Click here to hear the whole song:

Enjoy!

Tuesday, September 23, 2008: Alfie Silas -Star and Give Me Your Love

A double feature today! Two of my favorite songs of the 80's, both from the soundtrack for the "classic" film Berry Gordy's Last Dragon! Both songs are by the Motown recording artist Alfie Silas.

Alfie Silas-Star

Such a great driving song... especially on a sunny day, with some Cazals sunglasses and shoulder pads on! But thats what the 80s were all about...for me! :-D This song reminds me a lot of Let's Here It For The Boy by Deniece Williams from Footloose.

Alfie Silas-Give Me Your Love

A rarer hit than Star, but the vocals are outstanding! Give Me Your Love didn't even make the cut for the official soundtrack album that was released (inexplicably), but was in the film and could be heard in the scene where Leroy (Taimak) goes to Laura Charles' (Vanity) apartment to retrieve a special medallion given him by his kung-fu master! (Here's the link for this part of the movie, if you just GOT to see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDLLdyqksVc)

Enjoy!

Monday, September 22, 2008: Lena Horne- From This Moment On and Somebody Loves Me

Hello,
Sorry for the lateness of today's video. I started a new job today (thank the Lord!) and didn't get a chance to do it earlier. But don't worry, I'm going to do my best to stay on top of my game! Now, here's an oldie, but goodie...

Lena Horne- From This Moment On

Ms. Lena Horne sings one of her signature songs live on television in the late 1960's in her inimitable style. What elegance!?!?

Lena Horne- Somebody Loves Me

This song is better know by Peggy Lee (who wrote it), but I think Lena does a marvelous job. And get a look at her gown...so very chic then and RIGHT NOW!!!

Enjoy!

Love,
Charles

Tuesday, September 16, 2008- Sarah Vaughan- September Song and September in the Rain

Today's theme is September with Sarah...

Sarah Vaughan- September Song (Live!)

Sarah Vaughan- September in the Rain and Willow Weep for Me (LIVE!)

Weekend Edition: Fri. Sept. 12 - Sun. Sept. 14, 2008

Get out your Bartles & James and your Benson & Hedges...its the mickey frickey weekend!!!!!

This weekend I am featuring the gorgeous, talented Phyllis Hyman. She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. Her style is something greatly missed.

She had such a lengthy career (from the early 70's to mid 90's) and a diverse sound, encompassing blues, jazz, soul/r&b ballads, and dance/disco...sometimes covering more than one sound in a single song! I have not heard a song by her I didn't like. If you are not familiar with her work, I strongly recommend you look her up and get some of her music-you won't be disappointed!

It was difficult choosing which sound/period of her recordings for this weekend, so I decide to go with her first and biggest hit single "You Know How To Love Me" from her 1979 LP of the same name. That lead me to search out other tracks from that album and then I couldn't decide which ones to include-they were all so good- so I just decided to include the entire album! The only tracks missing are "But I Love You" and "Heavenly". The fact that so many tracks from one album were on YouTube lets you know what a classic this album is.
I hope you thoroughly enjoy...
